The Pennsylvania Turnpike is one of the world's first superhighways. Originally a route through the mountains between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, it has grown to stretch all the way across Pennsylvania, and thus Septempontia, from east to west.
The main route lies almost entirely in the southern portion of the state, but additional extension routes have been built as part of the Turnpike's system to carry traffic to the northern corners of the state, as well as to reach several areas which, though rural, are key trucking lanes.
One of the most remarkable features of the Turnpike when constructed were the Seven Tunnels along its path, which allowed it to pass directly through mountains rather than taking windy paths around and over the mountains – paths which would often be more foggy, snowy, or otherwise hazardous.
